Wood Stove Safety – Charlotte NC
Essential safety guidelines for wood stove owners in the Charlotte area.

Critical Clearances
Wood stoves get extremely hot. Improper clearances are a leading cause of house fires:
Standard clearances (verify with your stove manual):
- 36 inches from combustibles (walls, furniture) on all sides
- 18 inches from ceiling
- 18 inches from single-wall stove pipe to combustibles
- Floor protection: Non-combustible pad extending 18" beyond stove
Heat shields can reduce some clearances—but must be installed correctly with proper air gap.
Stove Pipe (Connector) Safety
The connector pipe from your stove to the chimney is a critical weak point:
Inspection Points:
- • Rust or corrosion holes
- • Loose or separated joints
- • Creosote buildup inside
- • Proper upward slope
- • Secure wall thimble connection
Warning Signs:
- • Smoke escaping at joints
- • Discoloration on nearby walls
- • Strong creosote smell
- • Visible soot deposits
- • Burning smell from walls
Single-wall pipe should be replaced if showing wear. Consider upgrading to double-wall pipe for improved safety.
Creosote: The #1 Wood Stove Hazard
Wood stoves produce more creosote than fireplaces because:
- Stoves often run with restricted air (slower, cooler burn)
- Long burn times allow more condensation in flue
- Connector pipes cool smoke before it reaches chimney
- Some owners "bank" fires overnight (very smoky)
Clean more often: Wood stove flues may need cleaning 2-3 times per season with heavy use.
Safe Wood Stove Operation
- Burn seasoned hardwood: Properly dried for 6-12 months minimum
- Start hot: Build a hot fire before reducing air—this burns off creosote
- Don't overload: Follow manufacturer's guidelines
- Use a stove thermometer: Optimal flue temp is 250-450°F
- Inspect connector monthly: Look for rust, leaks, buildup
- Keep ash cleared: Don't let ash build up more than 1 inch
- Never burn trash: Plastics and paper create dangerous fires
- Install smoke and CO detectors: Required for safety
