What Does a Chimney Damper Do?

The damper is a metal plate that controls airflow through your chimney:

    • Open when burning: Allows smoke and gases to exit
    • Closed when not in use: Prevents conditioned air from escaping
    • Energy savings: A closed damper saves hundreds per year in heating/cooling
    • Draft control: Partially open to regulate fire intensity

    Traditional Throat Dampers

Located at the bottom of the flue, just above the firebox:

    Advantages:

    • • Standard equipment in most chimneys
    • • Easy to operate
    • • Visible from firebox
    • • Repairable in many cases

    Disadvantages:

    • • Poor seal (warps with heat)
    • • Rusts over time
    • • Entire flue still exposed when closed
    • • Cold air pools above damper

Common problems: Won't open/close fully, handle broken, rusted shut, warped from chimney fire.

    Top-Sealing Dampers (Recommended Upgrade)

Installed at the top of the flue, replacing the chimney cap:

    Advantages:

    • • Rubber gasket creates airtight seal
    • • Seals entire flue (not just throat)
    • • Acts as cap AND damper
    • • Dramatically improves energy efficiency
    • • Keeps rain, animals, debris out

    Considerations:

    • • Higher initial cost
    • • Requires cable through flue
    • • Handle mounted inside firebox
    • • Not for gas fireplaces

Energy impact: Top-sealing dampers can save $200-500 per year in Charlotte's climate by preventing conditioned air loss.

    When to Upgrade to Top-Sealing

    Consider upgrading when:

    • Throat damper is damaged: Replacement cost is similar to upgrade
    • Energy bills are high: You'll recover the cost in 2-4 years
    • Cold drafts: Feel cold air coming from fireplace
    • Need new cap anyway: Top-sealing damper serves both functions
    • Smoke smell in summer: Better seal prevents odor entry

Note: Gas fireplaces require the damper to remain open. Top-sealing dampers are only for wood-burning fireplaces.
