Creosote Fire Hazard – Charlotte NC
Understanding the #1 cause of chimney fires and how to eliminate the risk.

What Is Creosote?
Creosote is a black, tar-like substance that forms when wood smoke condenses on cool chimney surfaces. It's composed of:
- Unburned wood particles
- Tar fog and vapors
- Hydrocarbon gases
- Organic compounds
Critical fact: Creosote ignites at 451°F—well below the temperature inside your flue during a hot fire. Once ignited, it can reach 2,000°F, hot enough to crack flue tiles and ignite surrounding wood.
The Three Stages of Creosote
Stage 1: Flaky/Dusty
Light, fluffy deposits easily removed with brushing. Lowest fire risk but still flammable. Forms with good burning practices and hot fires.
Stage 2: Shiny/Hard
Black, tar-like flakes that are harder to remove. Forms when airflow is restricted. Requires more aggressive cleaning tools.
Stage 3: Glazed
MOST DANGEROUS. Thick, shiny, tar-like coating. Extremely difficult to remove. Highest fire risk. May require chemical treatment or professional rotary cleaning.
When Creosote Ignites
A creosote fire is extremely dangerous:
- Intense heat: Burns at 2,000°F, much hotter than a normal fire
- Can spread: Heat transfers through masonry to combustible materials
- Structural damage: Cracks flue tiles, damages mortar, warps metal
- House fire risk: Can ignite attic insulation, wall framing, roofing
1/8 inch rule: The NFPA recommends cleaning when creosote reaches 1/8" thickness—regardless of stage.
Minimizing Creosote Buildup
While some creosote is unavoidable with wood burning, you can minimize buildup:
- Burn seasoned hardwood: Dried for 6-12 months, 20% moisture or less
- Maintain hot fires: Low, smoldering fires produce more creosote
- Ensure adequate airflow: Don't close damper too much
- Warm flue before loading: Use kindling to establish draft first
- Don't overload: Smaller, hotter fires are safer
- Annual professional cleaning: Remove buildup before it becomes dangerous
