Cracked Flue Tile Dangers – Charlotte NC
Why damaged flue liners are a serious fire and health hazard.

Why Your Flue Liner Matters
The flue liner is your chimney's inner protective barrier. It performs three critical jobs:
- Contains heat: Keeps 2,000°F+ temperatures away from your home's structure
- Channels gases: Directs carbon monoxide and smoke safely outside
- Protects masonry: Shields brick and mortar from corrosive byproducts
When the liner cracks, all three protections fail.
Dangers of Cracked Flue Tiles
Fire Risk:
- • Heat reaches wood framing
- • Creosote ignites in cracks
- • Pyrolysis of nearby combustibles
- • Attic or wall fires
Health Risk:
- • CO leaks into living space
- • Smoke enters through gaps
- • Invisible toxic exposure
- • Gradual poisoning symptoms
What Causes Flue Tile Damage?
- Chimney fire: Extreme heat (2,000°F+) cracks tiles
- Age: Clay tiles deteriorate over 50+ years
- Moisture: Water absorption followed by freeze cycles
- Settlement: House movement causes cracking
- Thermal shock: Rapid temperature changes
- Improper installation: Gaps or poor mortar joints
How We Detect Cracked Tiles
Flue tile damage often can't be seen from above or below. We use:
- Video camera inspection: High-resolution camera shows every inch of the flue
- Level 2 inspection: Required after any chimney fire or before property sale
- Smoke testing: Smoke reveals leaks through cracks
Important: A visual inspection from the firebox isn't enough. Most damage occurs higher in the flue where it's invisible without a camera.
Repair Options
Cracked tiles usually require relining rather than repair:
Stainless Steel Liner

Cast-in-Place Liner
- • Cement-like material
