The 3-2-10 Rule Explained
Building codes require chimneys to follow the 3-2-10 rule:
- 3 feet minimum: Above the roof where it exits
- 2 feet higher: Than any part of the roof within 10 feet horizontally
- 10 feet: The horizontal measurement zone
Simple version: Your chimney must be at least 3 feet above the roof AND 2 feet taller than anything within 10 feet of it.
