What Does Chimney Flashing Do?

Flashing is the watertight seal where your chimney meets the roof. It consists of:

Step flashing: L-shaped pieces woven into shingles along chimney sides
Counter flashing: Overlaps step flashing, embedded in mortar joints
Base flashing: Covers intersection at bottom of chimney
Back pan: Directs water on uphill side (with cricket if needed)
