Chimney Chase Cover Replacement – Charlotte NC
Protect your prefab chimney with a quality chase cover upgrade.

What Is a Chimney Chase Cover?
A chase cover is the metal lid that sits on top of a prefabricated (factory-built) chimney chase. Unlike masonry chimneys with concrete crowns, prefab chimneys have wood-framed chases covered with siding—and a metal chase cover is their only protection from water entry.
Chase cover functions:
- Prevents rain and snow from entering the chase
- Protects wood framing from rot
- Keeps animals out
- Directs water away from the flue pipe
The Builder-Grade Problem
Most Charlotte homes built in the 1990s-2010s have galvanized steel chase covers—and they're failing:
- Rust through: Galvanized steel rusts in 15-20 years
- Water pooling: Flat design doesn't shed water properly
- Seam failure: Joints open and leak
- Thin gauge: Builder-grade is often too thin to last
Warning sign: Rust stains running down your siding indicate chase cover failure.
Chase Cover Materials
Galvanized Steel (Not Recommended)
Cheapest option but rusts in 15-20 years. Only acceptable as temporary solution.
Stainless Steel (Best Value)
Won't rust, lasts 30+ years, moderate cost. Our most popular recommendation. Available in 304 (standard) or 316 (marine-grade for coastal areas).
Copper (Premium)
Lifetime material, develops attractive patina, highest cost. Excellent for upscale homes in Myers Park, Eastover, and SouthPark.
Aluminum (Budget Alternative)
Won't rust, lightweight, but can dent and doesn't last as long as stainless.
Quality Chase Cover Design
A properly designed chase cover includes:
- Cross-break: "X" pattern prevents oil-canning and adds strength
- Overhang: Extends past siding to direct water away
- Drip edge: Bent edge prevents water from running back underneath
- Proper slope: Water drains away from flue opening
- Storm collar: Seals around flue pipe to prevent leaks
- Heavy gauge: Minimum 24-gauge stainless for durability
